Research in Disaster Risk and Infrastructure Resilience

Workshop and Breakout Session

I will host one workshop and co-host a breakout session at next year’s NHERI Computational Symposium. The symposium will be held Feb 5-7, 2025, at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering.

Guest lecture at UC Berkeley

In Nov 2024, I gave a guest lecture in the class Disaster Risk Analysis for Infrastructure (CE294) at UC Berkeley, where I taught the regional natural hazard risk assessment workflow and practice using R2D.

Thanks, Prof. Luis Ceferino, for the invite.

Presentation at SimCenter’s transportation and lifeline community roundtable

In Oct 2024, I presented at SimCenter’s Community Roundtable discussion about liquefaction-induced hazards effects on buried utilities. I talked about modeling liquefaction hazards and infrastructure in R2D.

The talk recording can be found here.

Thanks, Prof. Jon Bray, for hosting and inviting me.

Presentation at NHERI Graduate Student Council (GSC) general meeting

In Aug 2024, I presented at the NHERI GSC general meeting. I talked about the recent development of SimCenter’s research tools and how the tools may support graduate students in natural hazard engineering.

The talk recording can be found here.

Thanks to the GSC for the invite.

Mentor NHERI Research Experience Undergraduate (REU) student

In collaboration with NHERI SimCenter, Jinyan co-mentored Cristian Varela, a student from NSF’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. Over ten weeks, Cristian worked on the project, Impact of Urban Flooding on Transportation Infrastructure, with the support of his mentors. The project focused on estimating the potential impact of flooding on the transportation network in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The report and presentation slides are available here.

Mentor at 2024 NHERI Computational Academy

In July 2024, I mentored a team of 5 graduate students and postdocs for a project about evaluating earthquake events in the San Francisco Bay Area highway transportation network.

The code and presentation produced during the project can be found here.

Presentation at IS-Macau 2024

In June 2024, I presented at a plenary session of the IS-Macau 2024, 11th International Symposium of Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground. I talked about the open-source ArcGIS toolbox for early-stage building safety assessment in urban excavation. This work is a collaboration with colleagues at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI).

Participate in the 2024 EMI conference

In May 2024, I participated in the 2024 Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) conference in Chicago, IL. I made two mini-symposium presentations titled “Importance sampling – based downsampling of forecasted earthquake ruptures in regional seismic risk analysis” and “Towards a Computational Platform for Integrated Regional Resilience Assessment of Interdependent Systems”. In addition, I presented at the EMI Objective Resilience Committee (ORC)’s annual meeting about “SimCenter’s tools to support infrastructure resilience assessment.”

Participate in the 2024 Natural Hazards Summit

In May 2024, I participated in the 2024 Natural Hazards Summit at the University of Maryland. Together with SimCenter colleagues, I hosted a user training workshop on R2D.
